Reducing our impact on the environment
The BSF programme in Haringey aims to minimise the impact of buildings on the global and local environment, by reducing energy use both in the construction and life of the building. This is in keeping with Haringey’s Greenest Borough Strategy.
Most of our projects are aiming to achieve an independent environmental rating (BREEAM) of 'Excellent’ or 'Very Good'. We have been accredited by the Carbon Trust for our commitment to reducing our CO2 emissions. You can find out more specific project information and BREEAM in the BSF and BREEAM section.
Haringey Sixth Form Centre is an award winning BREEAM excellent building. And it is anticipated that our final two projects at Heartlands High School and Woodside High Inclusive Learning Campus will also achieve the highest rating. Even though many of our projects have been remodelling rather than new build, those already assessed have received a rating of very good or good. The borough’s Greenest Borough Strategy has underpinned much of what Haringey BSF has delivered. Energy saving technology will enable the programme to help achieve a 20% reduction in CO2. Several projects are using natural, sustainable and renewable resources for power and heating such as ground source hearing supplemented with solar energy.
From the Sixth Form Centre to Alexandra Park - the first remodelling scheme to be assessed as very good by BREEAM assessors - the environment has been at the forefront of our project. Impressive landscaping at the Octagon, outdoor areas and green spaces are now a common feature of our schools – promoting a harmony between our school buildings and their local environment.
|back to topUsing natural resources
Several projects use natural, sustainable and renewable resources for power and heating such as Ground Source heating supplemented with Solar energy through Photo Voltaic cells.
Biomass boilers using waste product to fuel them and wind turbines to produce electricity will feature in others. Visit our individual school pages for details.
|back to topReducing CO2 emissions
Haringey’s new school in Wood Green, Heartlands High, is aiming for a 60 percent reduction in CO2 emissions through innovative ways of reducing energy and by using natural, sustainable energy resources.
Other schools which are part of the Haringey BSF programme are making the most of energy saving technology to achieve a 20 percent reduction in CO2 on their existing energy use.

The BSF programme also aims to have a positive effect on the teaching and learning within the schools through biodiversity (promotion of nature and wildlife), local groups and maximising recycling opportunities.
Where possible, biodiversity gardens has been planted and students are actively encouraged to study the wildlife, flora and fauna within their own school. Working with neighbourhood teams, leisure services and parks; teaching and learning will extend outside the classroom and into local communities.
Visit our individual projects to see what is being done at each school to help reduce their impact on the environment.
