Response to Sunday Telegraph article (21 Feb)
Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Cllr Lorna Reith said: "The responsibility for publishing the executive summary of this and all other serious case reviews rests with the independently chaired Local Safeguarding Children's Board, not individual agencies such as Haringey Council. This was made perfectly clear to the Sunday Telegraph’s reporter but he chose to ignore it.
Cllr Reith continued: "This review covers a period when there were serious shortcomings in our children's safeguarding service, and we are sorry for the past failures identified in this case. We are working hard to ensure there are continuous improvements to our services for vulnerable children.
"We have accepted all the recommendations of the review and are addressing the issues identified by the local safeguarding children’s board.
"These improvements form part of our wider programme of work that is well under way to bring the standards of our children’s service up to the level of the best, to ensure families and children in Haringey get the support they need."
Notes
- All queries on when and how the executive summary of the SCR was published should be directed to the independent chair of the LSCB Graham Badman.
- Initially doctors were concerned the injuries were deliberately caused, but further independent medical evidence suggested the injuries could have been caused by the child falling from the bed.
