Students’ winning school photos go on exhibition
Publication date: Thursday 14 April 2011

A selection of outstanding photographs of schools captured by young people from Haringey are now on display at a local museum.
The exhibition called "Inspiring Schools, Inspiring Pictures" is a result of a competition that encouraged children to capture images of the borough’s changing secondary schools on camera.
The striking images can be seen at Bruce Castle Museum, South Gallery, First Floor, Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, Tottenham – from Wednesday 13 April to Friday 27 May.
The competition and exhibition are helping to document and celebrate the improvements being made through Haringey Council's £214m+ Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. BSF is creating modern, teaching and learning areas for the borough's 12,000 secondary school students, and teachers.
The winning photographers were:
- Awet Mezghebe who won the 'best picture' prize. The 18 year old’s photo illustrated how St Thomas More School's modern learning resource centre compliments the school’s traditional red brick buildings.
- Eleven year old Storm Ranger; she won the 'individual prize for photography' for her dramatic image at Heartlands High School.
- Dawid Lubkowski also aged 11 won the 'best narrative' award after using two photographs to demonstrate his intriguing view of Heartlands.
- While Northumberland Park Community School, Tottenham, won the prize for submitting the most entries to the competition.
The winning images each received high quality photography equipment presented by Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.
Cllr Reith, said:
"The quality of photography is very impressive and the images produced by our young up-and-coming photographers wouldn't look out of place alongside the work of professionals. The exhibition is a great way of capturing and showcasing the breadth of change in teaching and learning in our secondary schools."
