Green Box Collections

Green Recycling BoxMany properties in Haringey are able to have a weekly green box recycling collection, providing a convenient way to recycle a large range of items.

This page includes the following sections:

Most households that have a green box collection can also recycle food waste and garden waste every week. For more information about these services, please visit the food waste collection and garden waste collection pages.

General service information

Collection day

Green boxes are emptied on the same day as wheelie bin collections. To find out your collection day, please use the search facility available on the Veolia Haringey website (external link). Alternatively, you can contact the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre:

Tel: 020 8885 7700
Email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk

Please put your green box out the night before your scheduled collection day. Many collections are made early in the morning, and even if your green box is normally emptied later in the day, the order in which streets are visited by the collection vehicles may need to be changed at short notice for operational reasons.

How to use your green box

Mixed recycling boxPlease leave your green box by the edge of your property (but not on the pavement) so that the collection crews can easily see your recycling. As noted above, boxes should be put out the night before the scheduled collection as the collection crews begin work early in the morning.

Green boxes are normally provided with lids, which clip onto the containers and help to prevent recycling falling or blowing out. Using the lid will also mean you can stack boxes on top of one another, saving space in your front garden.

If you do not have a lid, or you need another box to give you more capacity for your recycling, then please see below about how to order what you need.

Ordering new green boxes

If you have lots of recycling you can order additional green boxes free of charge.

Green boxes can be ordered using the Report A Problem page. You can also order boxes through the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre:

Tel: 020 8885 7700
Email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk

How the recycling is collected

Your recycling is collected by a special type of vehicle which looks similar to a normal refuse truck but has two compartments. One compartment is used to collect the food and garden waste whilst the other is used for the mixed recycling from your green box.

All the mixed recycling is compacted in this vehicle so that more materials can be collected every day. This helps to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, saving fuel and therefore cutting carbon emissions.

Your recycling is taken to a Materials Recovery Facility, where the latest technology is used to separate the different materials. The sorted items are then sent to reprocessing companies to be recycled into new products.

For more information, please see the mixed material collections section on the what happens to recycling page.

Can I receive a green box collection?

Green box collections are available to houses, converted houses or small blocks of flats that have a front garden space where the green boxes can be safely left out for collection.

If you live in a medium- or large-sized block of flats then the green box service is not likely to be appropriate. We are introducing dedicated recycling facilities for blocks of flats, so please visit the recycling for flats and estates page for more information.

If you live in a flat above a shop or a house without a front garden then you will probably not be able to receive a green box recycling collection, as you will not have a suitable location for the containers to be put out for collection (as they cannot be left on the pavement). There are a number of recycling banks around the borough that you can use to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars. We are looking into alternative types of recycling collection that we could introduce to serve properties above shops.
