Exhumation
If an exhumation is required, either for a full coffin burial or ashes/cremated remains, a special licence needs to be obtained from the Department for Constitutional Affairs.
Exhuming ashes is a relatively inexpensive exercise and means that should a family move away from the area, they can relocate their loved ones remains to somewhere nearby.
Although both types of exhumations require the same licence, when exhuming a full coffin many more regulations come into play. The local Department of the Environment has to be present to ensure all procedures are carried out according to Home Office regulations. This, together with need for specialist Funeral Directors, a new coffin, transfer travel costs, reburial at the new location and the costs of all personnel involved, makes a burial exhumation very expensive.
