School Supervised Medication

School and nursery supervised medication (prescription)

If pupils need to take prescription medication during the school or nursery day it is essential this is provided in an official chemist / hospital container, accompanied by written parental permission, and specifies:

  • the child's name
  • the medication and required dosage
  • emergency actions to be taken

Our Medicine Policy, written in consultation with the School Nursing Service, Insurance Section and relevant staff trade unions, states that:

  • Parents/carers should hand over medicines to the appropriate member of staff (Head Teacher, Centre Manager, First Aid Officer) for safe storage.
  • Members of staff cannot be required to administer medicines, but where they agree to do so this should be restricted to certain specified staff who are appropriately trained.
  • All medicines administered should be routinely recorded in an Administration Record, together with a note of any child refusal.
  • Parents are responsible for ensuring an adequate supply and replenishment of all prescribed items.
  • Where parents consider their child to be sufficiently capable and responsible to administer their own medicine (eg an asthma pump or inhaler) then a written parental consent should be completed.
  • When a child participates in an Educational Visit away from the school or nursery premises the medication, administration record and parental consent should be available during the visit.
  • Due to the risk of possible adverse effects 'over the counter', 'alternative' and herbal medicines are not administered by school/centre staff without written medical approval.
