Special olympics - volunteer training day

Tuesday 24 April 2007

A new drive to help people with learning difficulties take part in sport is being held this weekend.

A volunteer training day is being held in Tottenham on Saturday 28 April.

It's part of the Special Olympics programme which offers year round sports training and competitive opportunities for people with learning difficulties.

Training for the special olympics

Volunteers will learn how to develop and run sessions.

The event is being held at Haringey Mencap at the Bell Brewery building, 676 High Road, this Saturday from 10am-4pm and will be hosted by Haringey Council and Haringey Mencap. The training session is part of a new pilot scheme delivered by Special Olympics Great Britain.

Richard Taylor, of Haringey Mencap, said:

"We're looking for enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to help develop the Special Olympics movement in Haringey and north London.

"By volunteering for just a small amount of time, people can help us create new sports opportunities for adults and children who have learning disabilities.

"We would like to hear from both qualified sports coaches as well as people who just want to get involved and make a genuine difference to their community."

And Cllr Bob Harris, executive member for social services, said:

"We want to do all we can to offer sporting activities to people with learning disabilities.

"This joint venture is a worthy initiative. I'm sure volunteers will find it both fun and rewarding to take part."

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer for Special Olympics Haringey should contact Richard on 020 8365 0251.
