Carriageway Gritting

During snow and ice conditions, a priority system for carriageway gritting is in place to make sure that the key routes in the borough are kept open. Higher priority roads will be treated first, and once the conditions on these routes are satisfactory, lower priority roads will be gritted (if there is capacity to do so).

Some carriageways will be gritted before snow is forecast (known as pre-treatment), as well as when it has actually fallen (known as post-treatment). Pre-treatment cannot be carried out too soon before snow is expected to start falling, otherwise the grit may be dispersed from the road surface by vehicles or meltwater, so during periods of expected snowfall the council receives regular forecast updates from the Met Office so that the timing of any pre-treatment is appropriate. However, forecasts are never fully accurate, and snow may start falling before pre-treatment has been completed.

Below is more detailed information on the different priority classifications:

All roads in the borough are listed by priority order in the Carriageways - Winter Service Priorities document, which can be downloaded from the attached files section at the bottom of the page. The Carriageway Resilience Network list is also available, along with an A-Z list of all routes (and their priority ranking) as well as large high-resolution maps of the borough showing the different priority groupings.

Information on how to view the gritting routes using the Online Mapping function can be found in the maps section below.

Carriageway Priority 1

These are the most heavily trafficked and/or steepest carriageways, and those serving important locations (such as ambulance or fire stations) on less heavily trafficked roads.

  • These roads will receive pre-treatment on the forecast of snow, within a few hours of when it is expected to start falling.
  • Ongoing post-treatment of these carriageways will continue as required in order to keep them open and safe to use.

Carriageway Priority 1A (schools)

These are carriageways that do not carry heavy traffic, but do serve schools. This classification only applies during term time. During periods of school holidays, these routes will be gritted according to their position in the standard set of priorities.

  • These roads will receive pre-treatment on the forecast of snow, within a few hours of when it is expected to start falling, if we have been able to satisfactorily complete Carriageway Priority 1 pre-treatment.
  • Ongoing post-treatment of these carriageways will take place as often as required to keep them open, provided that Carriageway Priority 1 roads are fully operational.

A map of all Carriageway Priority 1A roads can be downloaded from the attached files section below. Please note that this is a large high-resolution file.

Carriageway Priority 2

These are moderately trafficked and less steep carriageways in the borough, and those serving locations where there are known groups of vulnerable people (such as residential care homes).

  • There will be no pre-treatment on these carriageways.
  • Post-treatment of these carriageways will be carried out, provided we have been able to adequately treat Priority 1 and 1A roads to keep them open.

A map of all Carriageway Priority 2 roads can be downloaded from the attached files section below. Please note that this is a large high-resolution file.

Carriageway Priority 3

These are the least trafficked and lowest gradient carriageways in the borough.

  • There will be no pre-treatment on these carriageways.
  • These carriageways may receive post-treatment during ongoing snow conditions to support the provision of refuse and recycling collections, or if there is capacity to undertake gritting once higher priority carriageways have been satisfactorily treated.

A map of all Carriageway Priority 3 roads can be downloaded from the attached files section below. Please note that this is a large high-resolution file.

Carriageway Resilience Network

In the event of an ongoing and widespread snow weather event, as was experienced throughout the UK in early 2010, the supplies of grit salt may not meet the demand. This would mean that the council may not have sufficient stocks to be able to satisfactorily treat the Carriageway Priority 1 routes.

The Carriageway Resilience Network comprises the roads that have been agreed with Transport for London as essential to keep London moving. In the rare event of a grit shortage, only these streets will receive ongoing treatment.

A list of the roads that are part of the Carriageway Resilience Network can be found in the attached files section at the bottom of this page, along with a large high-resolution map.

Contact information and gritting requests

For urgent or emergency gritting requests during normal office hours (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm), contact the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre:

Tel: 020 8885 7700

For urgent or emergency gritting requests outside normal office hours, call the Council’s Emergency switchboard on 020 8348 3148.

We will respond as quickly as possible to requests for emergency gritting to support responses by the emergency services and where there are vulnerable people at risk. Requests that do not fall into this category will be attended to if it is appropriate to do so within the Council’s approved priority response protocols as outlined in the Winter Service Plan 2010/11.
