Sack Collection
Wheelie bins will be provided for residents wherever possible. However, at some properties there is not enough room in the front garden or yard for a bin, or there are too many steps down to the pavement for our collection crews to safely move a bin full of rubbish. In these locations residents will be asked to present their refuse in sacks for the normal weekly collection. In addition, most properties above shops receive a daily or weekly sack collection.
How to use the service
Please note that the council does not provide residents with sacks for refuse collections. Black sacks are recommended, but residents can use any type of bag that they choose except clear sacks, which are used for recycling collections (see the recycling services section below).
Do not overfill sacks, and make sure that they are securely tied up so that the contents do not spill. If throwing away any sharp objects like broken glass, please make sure they are well wrapped in newspaper to prevent the sacks from being pierced and ripped, and to protect the collection crews from injury.
Where to put out the sacks
- For properties with front gardens, the sacks should be presented within the boundary of the property but as close to the front gate as possible.
- For properties above shops, sacks should either be put out at the designated location, or presented beside the kerb. Please do not obstruct the roadway or pavement.
Collection day
Properties with front gardens
For properties with front gardens where a wheelie bin cannot be provided, the sack collections will take place at the same time as bins are being emptied elsewhere on the road. To find out this day, please contact the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre:

Properties above shops
For properties above shops, the collection arrangements will be different according to the location.
- On some main roads there are timed collection arrangements in place, which means that sacks can only be put out during certain times in the morning and evening. For more information please visit the timed collections page, or refer to signposts attached to lampposts and other street furniture.
- On other main roads, the collections will take place during the morning and evening. Residents do not need to observe timed collections, but to help keep the borough tidy we do recommend putting sacks out before 9am in the morning and before 6.30pm in the evening.
- Properties above small parades of shops in residential areas may receive a weekly collection, on the same day as the household refuse bins are emptied.

Recycling services
Recycling collections are now available for residents living above shops, or in other locations where green boxes or recycling banks cannot be provided. Recycling is collected in clear sacks, which the council provides to residents for free, and the collections usually take place at the same time and location as the refuse collections. For more information please visit the clear sack collections page.
