Preparing for emergencies

Business Continuity: Advice for Businesses and Voluntary Organisations

Business Continuity Planning will help your organisation recover from an emergency. In these uncertain times, it makes sense to prepare for the unexpected.

What is Business Continuity?

A business continuity plan is a set of instructions of what and what not to do, at the time of an emergency. It is often created by someone, or a group of people, who know how the whole business is run.

Business continuity is about thinking ahead about what might affect your business and planning to ensure it can survive. An emergency might mean your business was unable to access a key site, you might lose key personnel, be unable to use its IT or get access to important data, or key resources such as stock or equipment might be lost. A good business continuity plan will cover such eventualities, so your business can survive and thrive.

How can Haringey Council help?

Haringey Council’s Emergency Planning and Business Continuity Team can provide general advice and support for organisations within the borough who want to prepare a Business Continuity Plan. Downloading a copy of our simple-to-use introductory guide on Business Continuity, and one of our plan templates will get you started (see attached files section below).

More information and guidance can be found by visiting the London Prepared website (see external links section below).

  • Are your sprinkler systems secure, make sure no one is able to tamper with them.
  • Have you set up loose arrangements for controlling an incident? Who will take control? Are people trained in what to do in an emergency?
  • Do you need to evacuate or stay in the premises in an emergency? This will depend on whether the threat is inside (a fire) or outside (a flood)
  • Sign up to the Haringey Emergency Alert Service.
