Celebrating the transformation of schools
Publication date: Friday 5 March 2010
A multi-million pound programme to transform schools in Haringey has been praised by teachers, pupils and senior figures.
At an event at Gladesmore Community School in Tottenham last week (Thursday 25 February), dozens gathered to celebrate the success so far of Haringey Council’s school modernisation programmes.
The event brought together students, teachers, council staff and contractors to mark the achievements of council’s £200m+ Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, and investment in local primary and pre-schools.
The celebration gave gifted young singers, musicians and speakers the chance to showcase their talents in Gladesmore’s new high tech auditorium, which was created as part of the BSF programme.
Investment in schools is overseen nationally by Partnerships for Schools and the chief executive Tim Byles attended last week’s celebration.
He said:
“More than 12,000 pupils in Haringey are already experiencing new and improved ICT and facilities as part of the borough’s £200+ million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, and this event is a fitting celebration of all the hard work done so far.
“I look forward to following Haringey’s progress as they continue to deliver 21st century learning environments to all.”
The event also saw Haringey’s construction partners and the ICT provider RM showing how they are helping the council to transform the classrooms, corridors and computers in the borough's schools.
Cllr Lorna Reith, the council’s cabinet member for young people, said:
“I really enjoyed seeing and hearing how students and staff are benefiting from school improvements. It is clear that many of our schools are already reaping the benefits of our efforts to create inspiring learning spaces for our young people."
By supporting teaching and learning in schools, Haringey is improving the life chances of local children and continuing to raise educational standards in the borough. Gladesmore is just one of the school’s to benefit from improvements as part of the BSF programme.
Tony Hartney, headteacher at Gladesmore, said:
"I am delighted with the improvements we have been able to make to the facilities at Gladesmore.
“Our fabulous students deserve the best all round education we can give them. The climate for learning is now superb. The students and staff are very appreciative. Gladesmore is already outstanding but with our new resources we will defy all expectations for an inner city school. Our students are capable of doing exceptionally well and our new improved buildings and resources will enable them to make the most progress they can so they can look forward to bright futures."
