Wood Green Today
The story so far
Wood Green is the heart of Haringey, drawing in people from across the borough and beyond to shop, work and have fun. It is also home to its own bustling and diverse community.
Its outstanding transport connections put the rest of London on the doorstep, and Haringey supports the opportunity of a landmark Crossrail 2 station (external link) which will bring the centre of the capital even closer. Everyone with a connection to Wood Green is rightly proud of its history as a thriving town centre, and excited about its future as one of the capital’s best places to live, work and visit.
In 2015 Haringey Council worked with Transport for London to deliver a Wood Green Town centre Improvement Programme. We invested £4.2million to de-clutter pavements and open spaces from Wood Green to Turnpike Lane Tube Stations and make the High Road a more welcoming place for residents.
But there are still opportunities to make Wood Green even better, over the last two years we’ve heard from residents, businesses and community groups about their concerns for the area. Issues raised include:
- Poor safety during the day and the evening
- Low-quality retail offering
- Tired and unappealing local environment
- No obvious link between the town centre and Alexandra Palace
- Not performing as well as its neighbouring boroughs
- Losing shoppers to the West End and Brent Cross
Since May 2015, we’ve been holding events around Wood Green to speak to as many people as possible and give them the opportunity to tell us what they think about their community and what they would like to see change.
We have also carried out two public consultations with residents on our Area Action Plan for Wood Green - read about the consultations on the Wood Green Area Action Plan page.
