Pupils name Haringey's new school

Thursday 3 July 2008

Twelve primary schoolchildren have won a competition to help find a name for Haringey's new secondary school, which opens in September 2010.

The winning pupils each suggested the name 'Heartlands High School' and this name has now been chosen by council members as the most suitable name for the school.

In all there were nearly 200 submissions after a competition was launched inviting local primary schoolchildren to think of a name for the new school.

'Heartlands High School' proved to be a popular choice among pupils, partly because the new school is being built in an area known as Haringey Heartlands, close to Alexandra Palace station. This area is known for its artists and musicians, and it is hoped the school will have links with the local theatre and arts' groups.

The competition winners - aged 8-10 - received certificates and £20 worth of gift vouchers as prizes. The winners of the competition included:

  • Ali Makhella, Alexandra Primary School
  • Jack K Isherwood, Campsbourne School
  • Kieran Loughran, St. John Vianney RC Primary School
  • Goodridge, Alexandra Primary School
  • Melissa Mutarazi St Michael's C of E Primary School
  • Nikita Deb, North Harringay Primary School
  • Ruqayah Juyel, Lordship Lane Primary School
  • Reece Twumasi, Campsbourne School
  • Yasmina Delishaj, Lordship Lane Primary School

Heartlands High School is being built as part of Haringey's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme which will see the rebuilding and renewal of the borough's secondary and special schools. When it opens the new school will be a mixed, comprehensive school for boys and girls aged between 11 and 16 - by which time many of the pupils who entered the competition will be moving from primary to secondary school - so some of the prize winners could attend the new school.

Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said:

"We had a wonderful response to the competition for the name of the new school.

"Heartlands High School was the one which was nominated by most pupils and we were delighted to go with that suggestion."
