Use of cookies

A cookie is a text-only string of information that a website transfers to the cookie file of the browser on your computer's hard disk so that the website can remember who you are.

A cookie normally contains the name of the domain from which the cookie has come, the "lifetime" of the cookie, and a value (usually a randomly generated unique number).

When you visit our website we might need to send you a cookie. Cookies may be used in the following ways:

  • To help us recognise you, so you do not have to re-key your registration details.
  • To help us recognise you as a unique visitor (just a number) when you return to our website.
  • To compile anonymous statistics that allow us to understand how users use our site and so help us improve it. We cannot identify you personally from this information.

The cookies we use do not contain any information which can identify you personally.

Cookies used on this website

We use cookies in several places – we’ve listed each of them below with more details about why we use them and how long they will last.

  • Google Analytics (measuring website usage)

We currently use Google Analytics to compile statistics about people who visit the Haringey Council website. Google Analytics uses JavaScript and cookies to monitor how people are using the site. The information typically collected is the IP address of the user, which pages were visited and for how long, date and time of visit, browser type, search terms etc. The web traffic does not contain any personal information which can identify you as an individual.

The information we get from Google Analytics helps us ensure this website is meeting users’ needs and to help us understand how we could do it better.

The following cookies are set by Google Analytics:

Cookie nameWhat it doesWhen it expires
_garandomly generated number2 years

For further information on how Google Analytics collects and uses data see the Google Privacy Statement in the external links section below.

  • Display Advertising Features

We also use Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting which uses data from the Google Display Advertising Network. We use aggregate data provided by this service (such as age, gender and interests) to better understand our website audience and adjust our communications appropriately. If you would like to opt out of Google Demographics and Interest Reporting you can change your Google settings here (external link)

  • Agilisys Engage (measuring website traffic)

We use Agilisys Engage to monitor how users travel across the website and the pages they visit. Agilisys Engage uses JavaScript to drop the cookie onto your browser. The information collected is IP address, date, pages visited, time spent on page, mouse movements, and pixel width of device. All data is stored using randomly generated IDs and no personal information is collected. The cookie does not collect any information entered on pages or forms.

The following two cookies are used:

Cookie nameWhat it doesWhen it expires
gn_cscv2This cookie stores the unique anonymous ID of each visitor. This cookie persists for 365 days
LGNrefThis cookie stores the profiling data e.g. the most recent web pages visited. This is a session-based cookie (expires when you close the browser)

gn_cscv2 is the 1st party cookie which Engage drops. This is dropped by JavaScript sitting on our web pages and is dropped under the Haringey domain.

LGNref is the 3rd party cookie, which Engage drops. This is dropped under the domain.

  • SOCITM Insight Survey

This survey is used to gather anonymous information from site visitors about their site visit - including what they were looking for and how satisfied they were.

This information is incredibly useful to us when designing pages and agreeing content for the site as it shows us what visitors are most interested in, and what they like and dislike.

The following cookies are used by SOCITM Insight:

Cookie nameWhat it doesWhen it expires
socitm_include_me9True/False1 year
ASP.NET_SessionIdRandomly generated numberwhen you close your browser
socitm_exclude_alt9True/False1 year
socitm_test_cookies9Randomly generated numberwhen you close your browser
  • Widgets

We use a number of third party widgets on our website - including ones from NHS Choices, Transport for London and Splashpash (for swimming timetables). These widgets also use cookies to remember preferences and location details. We have contacted each widget provider for more information regarding the name, purpose and duration of each cookie they are using and will post that information here as soon as it is available.

  • Third party hosted websites

Please note this is not an exhaustive list and that some other council websites we link to may also use cookies. For example our payments system would require session cookies to be used to allow transactions to take place, and library catalogue will need to set a cookie to remember who you are until you log out of the system.

We have approached the suppliers of those systems for more details and will post those details here in due course.
