PARK ART... in Haringey

25 July to 23 September 2012

A multi-venue sculpture park for Haringey

In 2012 Haringey Council commissioned UP Projects to bring high-quality contemporary sculptures to a range of parks and gardens across the borough.

Funded by the Arts Council, part of Haringey’s cultural offer for the Olympic summer, PARK ART... in Haringey sought to challenge perceptions of what sculpture could be with: sound installations, lighting work, community events and large scale physical sculpture.

Bruce Castle Museum - front lawn

Lion by Ben Long

Ben Long’s Scaffolding Sculpture of a Lion:
A nine metre tall classical lion on a plinth was built in-situ from builder’s scaffolding poles.
This monumental artwork referenced the traditional sculptural archetype of a regal lion and the heraldic emblem of Robert the Bruce, 'King of Scots', whose family owned a third of the manor of Tottenham.
The lion was the eighth in an on-going series of Scaffolding Sculptures, which the artist began in 2004.

Bruce Castle Museum - Tudor Hawk Tower

Martin Richman's reflective sculpture

Martin Richman and Charlie Kerr’s light and sound installation
Created by Martin Richman, the installation in the Tudor Tower responded to the unique characteristics of this former Hawksmews and its Tudor heritage. Made from dichroic Perspex, the hanging/reflective sculpture filled the cylindrical interior of the building. The accompanying soundscape by Charlie Kerr lent an industrial, contemporary twist to a Tudor melody.

Finsbury Park - Furtherfield Gallery Mackenzie Pavilion

Michael Szpakowski’s immersive soundscape
In the south of the borough at the Furtherfield Gallery (external link), Mackenzie Pavilion in Finsbury Park, artist and composer Michael Szpakowski worked with local children and their families to create an immersive soundscape. The acoustic experience included field recordings of children’s rhymes, so invoking a collective memory of childhood that people have brought to Haringey from all over the world.

Artists' Quotes

"It has been an honour to be able to contribute to PARK Art in Haringey. Commissions like this enable an artist to make very direct connections with the local audience. For me Lion Scaffolding Sculpture, as a temporary artwork, reflects the changes and evolution that urban boroughs like Haringey are constantly subjected to."

Ben Long, Lion Sculptor

"It was a delight to be part of this project, which has allowed me to do something quite traditional - making a 'sculpture' in a park and having the opportunity to have it experienced by large numbers of people - but using novel techniques: sound, computers and programming, and also involving the wider community in its making. I'm grateful for Haringey's boldness of vision and I hope that I was able to celebrate, in a small way, the vibrant, rich, multi-cultural place Haringey is."
