Tottenham’s Protheroe House completes hat-trick of top industry awards
Innovative supported living development Protheroe House has won a prestigious award at a national house-building competition, completing a hat-trick of major awards.
The scheme in Chestnut Road, Tottenham, was named the Best Inclusive Building at the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final – one of the building industry’s most coveted awards. This follows wins for the scheme at two other major national awards, the Best Supported Housing award at the Housing Excellence Awards and a Housing Innovation Award for Most Innovative Supported/Sheltered Housing Scheme.
Protheroe House, developed and run by local housing association One Housing as part of its Season Senior Living portfolio, was built by Galliford Try Partnerships with support from Haringey Council. The scheme forms part of a joint drive for One Housing and the council to help older people maintain their independence and remain living as ordinary residents in the community in affordable, high-quality homes that are right for them.
The innovative £9 million development opened in 2015 and enables older people with care needs to live independently in their own homes. The development has 50 flats designed to support independent living with the safety net of high quality personal care and support provided by a specialist on-site team.
Designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects and inspected by the council’s Building Control team, the horseshoe shaped building includes a state of the art medical and well-being centre, a guest suite for visitors, rooms with balconies and a roof terrace. Protheroe House also boasts communal areas including a restaurant, bar, café and spa facilities. Each of the 50 homes (36 one bed and 14 two bed apartments) is arranged around a central courtyard and communal landscaped garden.
The LABC Awards judging panel was made up of industry experts who were impressed with how Protheroe House has built links with the community, including a café that is open to the public as well as residents. Judges felt the development provides a modern take on specialist housing with an emphasis on independence and noted that it received extremely positive feedback from its residents. Judges also highlighted that the development had made a meaningful difference to people’s lives in Haringey.
Cllr Bernice Vanier, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Culture said:
“It’s fantastic that Protheroe House has picked up yet another industry award. We know that being able to live independently in the community can make a huge difference to older people and their families, which is why we’re committed to helping Haringey residents to do that. It was especially pleasing to hear the LABC judges highlighting the overwhelmingly positive reaction we’ve had from Protheroe House residents.”
Kevin Beirne, Group Director of Housing Care and Support at One Housing, said:
“Protheroe House is a brilliant example of how One Housing helps people live better in a home that is right for them. I’m delighted that the scheme has earned another high-profile award, which is testament to the skill of our teams. Schemes like Protheroe House help older people stay independent and part of the Tottenham’s amazing community, which is great for us all.”
Commenting on this award success, Stephen Teagle, Chief Executive of Partnerships & Regeneration at Galliford Try said:
“The LABC Grand Finals celebrate the very best of building excellence across the country and I’m delighted that we received recognition with these high-quality projects and the skill and expertise of our teams. It is precisely this type of work that cements our position as leaders in the delivery of affordable homes and regeneration. Well done to everyone involved.”
The LABC Building Excellence Awards finals were held in central London and were attended by more than 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers.
