New director of Children and Young People's Service appointed

Friday 12 December 2008

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, today appointed Peter Lewis as the new director of Children and Young People's Service in Haringey.

The appointment takes effect from 1 January 2009.

The announcement follows the temporary appointment of John Coughlan to the post in December.

Commenting on the appointment, the leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Claire Kober, said:

“Peter will provide the strong leadership which will be essential to drive forward the change and improvements needed to protect vulnerable children in the borough.

“He will have the support of the entire council in the important work he will be taking on in January.

“I would also like to thank John Coughlan for the tremendous hard work and commitment he has shown over the last few difficult weeks.”

Peter LewisPeter Lewis, currently Director of Education, Children’s Services and Leisure at Enfield Council said:

“I am pleased to be able to join Haringey and through my appointment, help provide some stability and renewed confidence for the staff that are working hard every day to do the right thing for children and young people.

“Safeguarding is the responsibility of the whole borough; not any one team or person, not just the council but everyone who works with and around children.  Therefore the role of Director of Children and Young People’s Service requires the ability to bring lots of different people and services together to focus on the needs of children and young people.

“I do not underestimate the challenges associated with taking on this role but I believe we can build a strong team at Haringey and deliver better lives for local children and young people.

“I look forward to taking up the new job in January and discussing with the staff and other organisations in Haringey how we can learn from the past and improve services for the future. “
