New Mayor of Haringey elected

Publication date: Tuesday 24 May 2011

Mayor Adamou

The new Mayor of Haringey for 2011/12 is Cllr Gina Adamou.

Cllr Adamou, who represents Harringay ward, took over the chains of office from outgoing Mayor Cllr Eddie Griffith last night (23 May).

It will be her second spell as Mayor, having previously served from 2006-2007. Cllr Adamou's son, Andreas, will be her escort throughout her Mayoral year.

Cllr Adamou hopes to use her year as Mayor to raise funds for, and support the work of, Haringey’s many carers and volunteers – in particular helping the Carers' Centre and the BME Carers' Group.

She said:

"This coming year for me will be about recognising the contribution made by so many volunteers in Haringey.

"I will be focusing especially on carers following my work on the scrutiny review on support to carers, through which I learned we have more than 16,000 unpaid carers in Haringey.

"I will work with other organisations to support and promote carers and volunteers and the important contribution they make to the borough."

Cllr David Browne will serve as deputy mayor.
