Lordship Recreation Ground
Lordship Lane, N17
- Major autumn lottery boost confirmed for Lordship Rec - 1 October 2010
Lordship Recreation Ground is a District Park situated in the heart of Haringey. It was first opened as a public park in 1932 and has long provided recreational facilities to people living in the Tottenham Area.

The River Moselle runs through the middle of the Rec running from west to east. The northern half of the park contains a large playing field and to the south lie a multi-use games area, adventure playground and the Shell Theatre and freestyle area. Also, south of the River Moselle lies a lake, playground area and paddling pool which are popular areas in the summer months.
Another interesting historical feature of the park is the Model Traffic Area which was opened in 1938 by the Minister of Transport and was designed to allow children to learn about road safety in a safe environment.
Recent Developments and Restoration Plans

In recent years Lordship Rec has suffered from a lack of resources and under usage, but since 2002 there has been an increase in partnership working between park users, the Friends of Lordship Rec, community organisations and the Council to set out a strategy for the Rec and encourage investment.
In summer 2009, the Council invested in a new playground with funding from the Big Lottery and the Marathon Trust and in 2010, a new natural play scheme was built around the playground thanks to funding from the Playbuilder scheme.
In September 2010, Haringey Council was awarded a significant capital investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund to implement a series of agreed redevelopment and improvement plans. Further match funding has been provided by the Council, the Greater London Authority and the Environment Agency to help fund the redevelopment of the park. Over the last few years these plans to help restore the Rec to its former glory have continued to be developed and shaped through consultation and the ongoing partnership between the Council and the Lordship Rec Users Forum.
The improvements include:
- Restoration of the River Moselle
- New Environment Centre with public toilets and cafe.
- Restoration of the Model Traffic Area
- Restoration of the Shell Theatre
- New bike track
- New information/community shop
- Significant re-landscaping works including new pathways, lighting, furniture and new trees and meadow areas.
To enable these exciting projects to commence, Vinci who are now based on site as the main contractor responsible for the works, have implemented a series of temporary works to assist machinery access and to help minimise damage to the Rec.
These temporary structures and arrangements include:
- a site compound at the Lordship Lane entrance
- removal and storage of the original Lordship Lane entrance gates
- a temporary spine road through the site for heavy vehicle access
- a temporary vehicle bridge and pedestrian path across the River Moselle.
We aim to keep the park open as much as possible throughout the project and to keep disruption to a minimum. However, these are substantial works and there is likely to be limited access at different areas of the park throughout various periods of the construction phase. The co-operation of local residents and park users will be appreciated whilst these works are being carried out. The various user groups will continue with their activities - check out the park notice boards for updates.
The regeneration works for the park are due to be completed by July 2012
To find out more about the planned improvements view the attached files section.
Other exciting projects currently underway include the new Back2 Earth Harmony Gardens which are developing around the grounds of the Broadwater Farm Community Centre. These new community gardens are being built by local volunteers under the Back2 Earth’s ‘Workability Scheme’. For more information about this project contact Felix Waterhouse on 020 8808 1829
The Inclusive Learning Campus (ILC) is another exciting new school development planned for the local area within Broadwater Farm Estate. For more information please view the ILC Haringey webpage.
