Lordship Recreation Ground

Lordship Lane, N17

Heritage Lottery Fund LogoLordship Recreation Ground is a District Park situated in the heart of Haringey. It was first opened as a public park in 1932 and has long provided recreational facilities to people living in the Tottenham Area.

The River Moselle runs through the middle of the Rec running from west to east. The northern half of the park contains a large playing field and to the south lie a multi-use games area, adventure playground and the Shell Theatre and freestyle area. Also, south of the River Moselle lies a lake, playground area and paddling pool which are popular areas in the summer months.

Another interesting historical feature of the park is the Model Traffic Area which was opened in 1938 by the Minister of Transport and was designed to allow children to learn about road safety in a safe environment.

Recent Developments and Park Improvements

In early summer 2009, Recreation Services invested in a new playground with funding from the Big Lottery and the Marathon Trust. The playground is in the heart of the Park and boasts a large selection of play equipment for all ages and has been very popular with local parents and children.

Recreation Services is also currently developing an additional Natural Play Scheme thanks to funding from Playbuilder. The project is located adjacent to the new playground and uses recycled materials such as boulders and logs to create an innovative and challenging play space. This project is scheduled for completion by early summer 2010.

In recent years Lordship Rec has suffered from lack of resources and under usage but since 2002 there has been an increase in partnership working between park users, the Friends of Lordship Rec, community organisations and the Council to set out a strategy for the Rec and encourage investment.

There are a wide range of user groups and regular activities in the park, including the Friends of Lordship Rec, Trax cycle club, Dog Club, Back 2 Earth green projects, walking group, sports teams and other activities based at the adjacent Broadwater Farm Community Centre. These groups, together with the Council's Recreation Services and other interested organisations, are working together through the Lordship Rec Users Forum to promote and oversee the regeneration of the park.

Consultation

To inform and shape the current plans several consultation events have been carried out with the visitors, local and wider stakeholders and users of the Rec. This consultation log has been summarised below:

  • 2005: a seven day consultation project was carried out by Haringey Play Association, to ascertain views of local children around Lordship for new refurbished play facilities.
  • Feb 2006: Lordship Masterplan Consultation workshop analysis- 2 day public consultation was held in Broadwater Farm Community Centre and attended by 150 people. The workshop was led by an independent consultant and provided useful feedback which has been integrated into the overall site plans.
  • March 2007: Charity Back to Earth undertook consultation with local stakeholders on activities they would be interested in pursuing as part of an environment centre and the type of building they would feel appropriate. More than 240 adults and children were surveyed over a three month period.
  • Summer 2008: observation study took place to find out how many people were using the Rec and gain a greater understanding of users age, gender, ethnicity and their use of the Park.
  • In addition to these, an annual user survey of the Rec. is carried out by KMC. This is a very useful way of engaging the users of the Park, especially those who would not attend a meeting or consultation event.
  • Feb 2009: 2- day consultation event at BWFCC helped to further shape the plans for the new developments and overall Masterplan.

Heritage Lottery Fund

In September 2007, a successful funding application was made to the Heritage Lottery fund for significant capital investment to finance a series of redevelopment and improvement plans. Over the last few years, these plans have continued to shape and develop to further improve the Rec’s facilities and help restore the park back to its former glory. In May 2010 a further detailed funding application was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund and a final decision is expected in September 2010.

The regeneration plans for Lordship Rec. include the following improvement projects:

  • Restoration of the River Moselle
  • A new Environment Centre with public toilet facilities and café- please see concept in the attached files section
  • Significant re-landscaping works including new pathways, restored entrances, new litter and dog bins and improved seating.
  • New Bike Track
