Kinks legend opens new music block
Publication date: Tuesday 23 November 2010
Kinks legend, Ray Davies, has opened a new music block at Fortismere School in Muswell Hill.

The new block features recording and control studios, teaching areas and instrumental rooms for groups or tutorials - supported by new ICT facilities.
The block is a key part of Haringey Council’s £214m Building Schools for the Future programme. This is currently bringing improvements to the borough’s 12,000 secondary school students and teachers, by creating modern teaching and learning spaces, supported by innovative ICT.
Local musician Ray Davies said he was ‘very impressed’ with the new music facilities in the school’s north wing. The music block links the music department with drama, dance and art, creating a Performing Arts Centre.
Cllr Lorna Reith said: “I’m delighted that young people are able to take advantage of these outstanding new music resources, which provide a real boost to the school’s status as a centre of excellence for performing arts.”
Headteacher Helen Anthony added: “Fortismere has a strong pulse of creative energy which is highly evident and a real joy. I have been both impressed and moved by the music I have heard from a range of genres and indeed students.
“A school whose students' playing is so moving that it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, is a wonderful place to be and our music block will ensure that music is at the heart of our school. It will also provide a fantastic resource for community use.”
The opening of the block, which was constructed by Balfour Beatty, was celebrated by an evening of music - including performances from students, The Crouch End Festival Choir and a steel band.
