Nominate your Young Haringey Heroes
Thursday 1 May 2008
A new event to celebrate the exceptional achievements of young people in Haringey is to be held later in the summer.
Young Haringey Heroes will feature 11 categories to reflect the wide range of achievements by young people in the borough.
There will be two age categories: junior awards for young people aged 12 and under and senior awards for those aged 13 and over.
Winners will be presented with certificates and prizes at a special ceremony on July 4. Leading up to that ceremony, there will be a celebration fortnight where schools and groups will lay on special presentations to highlight their work and achievements of young people.
The fortnight will start with a "Powerful Voices" conference which gives young people in the borough a chance to air their views about life and services in the borough.
Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said:
"There are some remarkable young people in Haringey. These events will be a fitting way of publicly recognising their achievements."
The categories are:
- Young Carer Award - for remarkable children and young people who in addition to their caring responsibilities, have for example, used their life experience to raise awareness of young carers or achieved other personal goals.
- Young Volunteer Award - for those children and young people who have dedicated their free time to helping others.
- Sport Achievement Award - individuals who have shown determination, hard work and talent in sports.
- Young Environmentalist - for those individuals who have achieved positive, sustainable change for the environment and commitment to increasing awareness of environmental issues at a local level.
- Supporting Peers Award - for those individuals who have demonstrated commitment to supporting their peers, as a peer mediator or buddy or acting as a positive role model in their community.
- Music and Performing Arts Award - for children and young people who have demonstrated creativity, exceptional talent and dedication to performance and music.
- Visual Arts Award - for children and young people who have demonstrated creativity, imagination and exceptional talent in an area of creative and visual arts, such as digital media or sculpture.
- Outstanding Positive Contribution Award - for exceptional individuals who have achieved something amazing despite challenging circumstances, for either their peers or their community.
- Young Entrepreneur Award - for children and young people who have taken an idea, be it business related, product development or social enterprise and shown creative thinking and commitment towards realising their dream.
- Outstanding Academic Progress Award - this could be a child or young person who has achieved academic progress and demonstrated extraordinary commitment.
- Outstanding Progress by a child or young person new to the UK - this could be an individual who has progressed and developed since arriving in the UK, either in school, college or through involvement with their peers and community.
If you want to nominate a young person, forms are available at schools, libraries, youth centres and from the YouthSpace website at: www.youthspace.haringey.gov.uk/haveyoursay
