School building projects given the go-ahead to transform learning
Friday 12 September 2008
Progress continues to be made with Haringey Council's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme with three more projects being granted planning permission this week.
Students and staff will now see significant improvements to the school buildings and facilities at Highgate Wood, Montenotte Road N8, Park View Academy, Langham Road N15, and Gladesmore Community School, Crowland Road in Tottenham.
Development of these projects will support Haringey's aim of transforming teaching and learning through BSF.
The projects have been developed through consultation between the council, the school and its stakeholders.
Features of the projects include:
- Park View Academy's £12 million project features remodelling and refurbishment (with some demolition and new build) of the existing secondary school; a new forum space, remodelling of hall, dining and Learning Resource Centre (LRC), new landscaping, and upgrades to the building fabric;
- Gladesmore Community School's £10 million project will see the demolition of existing teaching blocks and the gymnasium; the creation of a new auditorium and new maths faculty building; erection of a new entrance and a new covered cloister to internal school courtyard;
- The £5 million Highgate Wood School scheme includes extensions to the school building, a new learning resources centre, four new classrooms, additional dining/social space and relocation of an existing open air stage.
Councillor Liz Santry, Haringey cabinet member for children and young people, said:
"I'm delighted that by working closely with each school we have been able to find designs which when realised will make a real, positive difference to teaching and learning years for to come. These projects will contribute to the continued success of these schools."
In addition, these schools and all Haringey secondary and special schools are also to benefit from improvements to their information communications technology.
