The production of a local JSNA is a legal requirement from 1st April 2008 for organisations with formal responsibility for planning and arranging publicly funded provision of health and social care services. This is known as commissioning. The JSNA is a joint responsibility of Haringey Council and the Primary Care Trust.
|TopWhat is a JSNA?
A JSNA is a method of gathering information about the current and future health, care and well-being needs of the population. This information will then be used for service planning and commissioning strategies.
A JSNA is not about identifying the needs of an individual, but looks at the ‘big picture’ of the local population, specifically groups whose needs are not being met. We will work together with the PCT to develop the JSNA, to look to the future - over the next 5, 10, 15 and 20 years - so that we can plan now for likely changes in needs.
|TopHow will we do it?
1) In order to develop our JSNA we have set up the following groups:
- A JSNA Steering Group with membership from:
- Haringey Teaching Primary Care Trust
- Haringey Council
- Haringey Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations.
- A JSNA Delivery Group with representatives partner organisations to support the technical aspects of developing the JSNA including data and IT requirements
- A JSNA network to ensure that everyone who needs to is kept informed of the relevant developments.
2) The JSNA Steering Group will work with commissioners, Haringey Strategic Partnership and the thematic partnerships to ensure usable intelligence can be drawn from data, analyses and assessments available.
3) We have prepared a borough profile, which provides an analysis of what Haringey is like to live in. The data in the profile will form the basis for the core dataset JSNA. In addition to this we are undertaking an audit of who holds what information, where it is held and in what form. We are using the borough profile and the audit to help us develop the core dataset and highlight any information gaps that we will need to address.

- Outline the major indicators available locally and some key trends demonstrated by these indicators
- Provide a resource for commissioning
- Identify major gaps in data availability,
- Identify priorities for future collection/ collation of data,
- Identify areas where our understanding of need is lacking.

4) During 2008/09 we will also collect and analyse data on a number of specific groups in Haringey and this information will then inform our commissioning plans from November 2008.
|TopWhat should a good JSNA achieve?
- Provide analysis of data to show the health and well-being status of local communities
- Shows where inequalities are
- Uses local community views and evidence of services to shape the future of these services
- Establishes clear improvements in health and well-being for the local community
- Informs existing and future providers of services about potential service change
- Supports the delivery of better health and well-being outcomes for the local community
- Informs the next stages of planning
- Aids better decision-making
- Underpins the Local Area Agreement and the choice of local outcomes and targets
