Who are carers?

Carers are adults and children who take care of adults or of disabled children. They are unpaid. The caring role is stressful, often 24/7, and can be isolating. Carers provide care to people who are ill, frail or living with a disability and who cannot manage without them. Carers look after partners, spouses, family members, friends or neighbours.

The cared-for person must live in Haringey, although carers may live inside or outside the borough.

If you are a carer, you're not alone. According to the 2001 census, there are approximately 16,000 carers in Haringey.

There are around 1,000 carers on the Haringey register.

How we help carers

If you are an unpaid carer, you have the right to a carer's assessment. This will give you the opportunity to discuss any help you need with caring and maintaining your own health and well-being

We aim to support carers in Haringey to care and to live a better life. We do this by working in partnership with the health service to deliver a wide range of services and advice.

Use the navigation links on the left of this page to find out how carers can get an assessment of their needs and extra support with their caring responsibilities.

For more information about services, advice and support for carers, you can download a copy of: The Essential Guide for Carers in Haringey.

Carers Development Service

The service coordinates activity and development on carers' issues across the statutory and voluntary networks in Haringey. The Carers Development Manager:

  • provides a link to the care management teams
  • commissions new services
  • helps to deliver the multi-agency Carers Strategy
  • gives advice to individual carers
  • makes referrals for carers' assessments to care management teams
  • mediates on behalf of carers who have difficulty in accessing services
  • signposts carers to universal services and benefits available to all carers.

One of the most recent initiatives to support carers is the introduction of an emergency alert card. For more information about how this can you help if you are a carer, please go to Carers Emergency Alert Card.

Active Card for Unpaid Carers

The Active Card is Haringey’s Leisure Pass. Registered carers can apply for an Active Gold Card which gives free admission to all Haringey Leisure Centres when supporting the person they look after to use the facilities. Terms and conditions apply for certain activities. For more information, you can dowload a copy of the Active Card for Unpaid Carers information leaflet.

Carers Strategy

The Carers Strategy 2005-2008 sets out the overall aims and objectives for carers' services in Haringey. It has been developed in partnership with carers and recognises that carers are not only the responsibility of social care and health agencies but wider services such as housing, leisure, employment and education:
