Subject support

We have a team of advisers and associates who provide support and guidance in subject and whole school issues including:

  • English
  • Science
  • Technology
  • Mathematics
  • Art
  • Physical Education and dance (PE)
  • Religious Education (RE)
  • Modern foreign languages
  • History and geography
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Personnel Health and Education (PSE)

In addition, there are consultants in literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language, who provide ongoing training in these areas both within the school and at the teachers’ centre. We provide many opportunities for teachers to improve their own ICT (Information and Communications Technology) skills and their expertise in using information technology in the classroom.

After the induction year

Once teachers have passed their induction year, the advisers and consultants provide a range of courses each year to support teachers’ development in subject areas and whole school initiatives.

Management responsibilities

There are also many opportunities for teachers who take subject and other middle management responsibilities to undergo training to support their work as subject leaders and middle managers.

There are network meetings for all subject leaders each term and courses specifically related to developing teachers’ competencies as defined by the Teacher Development Agency (TDA) subject leader standards.

We have introduced new posts of Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) which give opportunities for skilled classroom teachers to offer their expertise within and between schools and to contribute to in-service training throughout the borough.

Professional associations

We host a number of meetings of professional subject associations each year to discuss teachers terms and conditions in order to be responsive as possible to teachers’ needs.

Head teachers and deputy heads

We support a number of deputy heads and head teachers attending national training initiatives such as National Professional Qualification for Head teachers (NPQH) and Leadership for Serving Head teachers (LPSH).
