Help finding a home

Finding a place to live can be very difficult. This section contains links to useful information about renting privately or buying a place to live in Haringey.

Renting a home

When looking for a home you need to be realistic about what you can afford and what is available in your area. See Shelter’s advice on finding a home in the external links section at the bottom of the page for a handy checklist of what to look out for when renting privately.

Further practical advice about a variety of living arrangements can be found on the following websites:

  • Citizens Advice Bureau Advice Guide: deals mainly with finding rented accommodation, but also includes certain schemes run by local authorities and housing associations to help you buy your own home.
  • Shelter advice on finding a home: information about different housing options, from finding emergency housing to buying your own place. It explains how the costs compare and how each option affects your rights.

Letting agents

If you are planning to rent a property you may decide to go through a letting agent. If the agent is a member of the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS). This means they have agreed to meet defined standards. Browse the NALS website to find member agents near you.

Buying and selling a home

Information on buying or selling a home, home buying schemes, moving advice, building your own home and services for property sellers and buyers can be found on the Direct.Gov website (see the external links section at the bottom of the page).

Estate agents

If you are planning to buy a home, the most common way to find one is through an estate agent. Browse the National Association of Estate Agents website for a list of members.

Emergency accommodation

The following websites offer help if you are homeless or in urgent need of a place to stay:

  • Shelter - gives a number of different emergency housing options, but you may need help from an adviser to access them.
  • Centrepoint - advice for young people in need of  emergency accommodation.

Housing options for disabled people

The DirectGov website contains lots of information on home and housing options for Disabled people. Sections include independence at home, adaptations, grants, the Independent Living (1993) Fund, equipment, supported housing schemes, sheltered housing, care homes and the Supporting People programme
