School Journeys

School Travel Plans

School Travel Plans are an essential tool for us to assist our borough’s schools and utilising their views and recommendations to improve the safety of journeys to school, plan our engineering schemes, aim to reduce traffic congestion and parking problems around schools.

Schools with approved travel plans can become eligible to apply for grants from Transport for London, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Schools can receive funding for anything from engineering measures, to planning curriculum work and classroom resources.

We are currently training staff from our schools to use the new On-Line STAR-Track from Transport for London, making it easier to complete their School Travel Plan. The exciting news is that staff and pupils can now work together and aim at higher levels of achievement within the streamlined STP scheme.

Schools can book training now by contact the Smarter Travel Team on 020 8489 1417

Walk Once a Week

Changes within Haringey mean we stopped funding this scheme for schools in Haringey, however, the scheme is still active and you can still order resources directly from the walk to school website (external link)

We are  funding other initiatives aimed at encouraging pupils to walk to school such as Walk to School Week 21-25 May 2012 This years theme is “Striders Walking Challenge”  plot your journey and how far can your class get John O’Groats to Lands End.

Walk It” is another information site that can help plan walking routes, especially when your child is moving from primary to secondary school.

Walking Bus Scheme

A walking bus is where a group of school children walk to and from school under the supervision of grown up volunteers, one at the front (The Driver) and one at the back (The Conductor). They walk the same way each day, stopping at 'bus stops' to pick up and drop off kids along the way.

If you would like further information on the Crocodile Bus Club, please read the ‘Get on board’ walking bus leaflet in the attached files section below.

Junior Road Safety Officers

Hundreds of schools across London are involved in the Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) scheme. It gives pupils a dynamic role in road safety and active travel education along with the chance to get serious messages across in a fun way.

The role of JRSO is to tell everyone in the school how to stay safe on the road, how to make travelling to school more active and to have fun at the same time. There are ideas for lessons and initiative for the whole school to take part in.  The JRSOs will also be encouraged to complete their section of the School Travel Plan to help the school achieve targets in the School Travel Plan.

If your school hasn't yet joined the scheme, talk to your local Smarter Travel Officers who will help you get started. You can also find more information from the JRSO website.
