Streetscape

Example of Wood Green Town CentreOur £5 million ‘Better Haringey’ programme was launched in September 2003 with the aim of cleaning up and improving the Borough.

We are pleased to report that our streets are noticeably cleaner and the quality of life for those who live, work and visit the Borough has visibly improved.

However, it is recognised that some parts of the Borough still suffer from street clutter and un-coordinated street furniture which does not result in a user friendly environment.

There are also instances in the Borough where advertisement signs and goods provide obstacles for pedestrians using our footways. These are problems we want to eliminate and believe the new Streetscape Manual will help achieve this.

Streetscape Manual

The manual (see attached files section) describes how we intend to maintain and improve the high standard of environmental quality established by the Better Haringey Programme. This includes reducing street clutter, co-ordinating the different elements of the streetscape and limiting the range of materials used. We feel it is also important to protect and enhance the historic character and identity of Haringey and the Manual identifies how this can be used.

Aim of the Streetscape Manual

  • Improve the environmental quality of Haringey’s streetscape.
  • Set consistent specifications for streetscape elements (e.g. street furniture and footway materials) across our borough.
  • Establish guiding principles for the design and layout of streetscape elements.
  • Encourage good design and innovation and not be overly prescriptive.
  • Provide a good practice reference document for our Council and other agencies.
  • Provide a framework for the town centre strategies we are developing.
  • Encourage the development of civic pride and a sense of ownership by enabling residents and local stakeholder groups to understand our vision of Haringey’s streets.

Who is the Manual for?

Those who design and maintain the streetscape in Haringey will use the Manual as a reference document. Council departments, contractors, developers, transport agencies and utility companies will all use the Manual. It will also provide stakeholder groups, businesses and residents with a statement of the council’s aspirations when designing and maintaining the Borough’s Streetscape.

The guidance in the Manual is non-statutory but does link into UDP (Unitary Development Plan) policies concerning town centres, conservation and the protection of the environment. The guidance will aid developers in understanding the requirements of the council in terms of streetscape improvements.
