Why are we enforcing Moving Traffic Contraventions?

The enforcement of moving traffic contraventions was previously the responsibility of the Police. This responsibility was handed over to the London Borough of Haringey in November 2005 to help ensure the free flow of traffic on our roads. This has allowed the Police to focus their resources on other aspects of transport and fighting crime.

What are we enforcing?

21 road signs are enforced under the scheme, and are all existing signs that are well known to drivers and part of the Highway Code. Any driver ignoring these signs could face a penalty charge.

All money raised from this enforcement is re-invested back into improving conditions and safety for all Haringey road users.

How do we enforce these traffic signs?

Haringey is in a unique position to enforce these offences with our network of CCTV cameras around the borough. We also use our mobile enforcement units or ‘smart cars’ that are equipped with CCTV cameras and are able to move around several locations within the borough.

Drivers that ignore the road signs not only endanger themselves but also endanger other road users. Stopping these few inconsiderate drivers will result in safer roads and less congestion for all London road users.

If you have any suggestions for locations that require enforcement within Haringey please call Tel 0845 073 1234 or email us at traffic.problems@haringey.gov.uk
