Alexandra ward by-election

A by-election to elect one councillor in Alexandra ward will take place on Thursday 9 October 2008. The by-election follows the resignation of Cllr Wayne Hoban.

Registering to vote

To vote in council and other elections your name must be on the electoral register. The last day for Alexandra ward residents to register in time to vote in the by-election is Wednesday 24 September 2008.

A voter registration form can be downloaded at www.haringey.gov.uk/voting, or contact the electoral registration team by email elections@haringey.gov.uk  or telephone 020 8489 0000.

Please note that if you live in Alexandra ward and are not currently on the register, you will have to fill in a new voter registration form and return it by 24 September 2008 in order to vote in this by-election. This applies even if you have completed the general electoral registration form sent out recently. This general form is for the annual update of the register, effective from December each year, and cannot be used to add new voters to the register for this by-election.

Standing for election

Nomination papers from people wishing to stand for election must be delivered to the Returning Officer, Civic Centre, High Road, Wood Green London N22 8LE by noon on Friday 12 September 2008. There are a number of rules governing who can stand for election. See www.haringey.gov.uk/becoming_a_councillor or call 020 8489 2951/2/3 for more information.

Arrangements for postal or proxy votes

If you are unable to get to a polling station to vote or do not wish to, you may apply for a postal vote. Applications for a postal vote and amendments or cancellation of existing postal vote arrangements must be received by the Returning Officer, Civic Centre, High Road, Wood Green London N22 8LE by 5pm on Wednesday 24 September  2008.

Applications to vote by proxy in this election should go the same address by 5pm on Wednesday 1 October 2008.

If a proxy vote is needed because of physical incapacity suffered after 5pm on 1 October, the application must be in by 5pm on election day, Thursday 9 October.

Voting

All eligible voters in Alexandra ward will receive a polling card with details of where to vote. Polling stations will be open from 7.00am to 10.00pm.
