Laurels Healthy Living Centre

A healthy living centre for Seven Sisters

Laurels Healthy Living Centre

Since its launch in June 2004 the Laurels Healthy Living Centre has welcomed more than a thousand local people through its doors to access a broad range of health and community facilities.

The purpose built healthy living centre in St Ann’s Road, Seven Sisters was opened in response to resident’s concerns about the lack of GP and other health facilities in their area.

The Laurels was the first capital project for The Bridge NDC, which is a £50 million regeneration programme based in the South Tottenham and Seven Sisters area.

It is made up of a partnership between local residents and key agencies such as: Haringey Council, the National Health Service, The Metropolitan Police, and Job Centre Plus. It began in April 2001 and runs for ten years.

The Laurels Healthy Living Centre is a groundbreaking example of partnership working between key agencies, community groups and residents to provide the services residents need where they want them.

The aim of the Laurels is to bring together a range of primary care, alternative therapies and community projects under one roof to tackle the health needs of the local residents in a holistic fashion. The centre also provides an after hours service for local people.

The centre houses health professionals, two GP practises, district nurses, speech and language professionals, baby and sexual health clinics, community health projects, citizen’s advice sessions, complementary therapies and community centres promoting health and wellbeing.

There is also a community café at the centre, which is run as a training project for the long-term unemployed and the mentally ill.

The Bridge NDC has recently purchased the head lease for the health centre, this means the NDC can now collect rent from 80 per cent of the users to provide a solid income to support the project.

A study is currently being conducted to access the impact of the Laurels on the local community.
