Open Day

Haringey shows the way on Getting Closer to Communities

Open Day Beacon Council

The day was the first in a series of workshops, learning events and open days being hosted by Haringey in its role as a Beacon Council. Delegates from all over the country took part in a series of work shops to share information and best practice in celebrating diversity, encouraging active citizenship and engaging with a transient population.

Haringey was awarded Beacon status in 2005 to act as a model of good practice for other councils and agencies involved in community based working.

Haringey's award is for excellence and innovation in the ‘Getting Closer to Communities’ category.

Council achievements highlighted in the Beacon Award include the seven area assemblies and their popular Making the Difference budgets, local partnership boards, youth forums and major projects including the new neighbourhood resource centre in Northumberland Park and the Laurels Healthy Living Centre in Seven Sisters.

The event was opened by the then Council Leader Charles Adje, and the keynote speaker was Paul Roberts, Director of Strategy and Development, IdeA.

Cllr Lorna Reith, Haringey’s Lead Member for Community Involvement, said:

The day is about sharing Haringey’s experience.

“Working in partnership with local communities gives us great strengths, including the opportunity to really listen to local people and make the improvements they want.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming practitioners from across the country and sharing the challenges and experiences of working in this most cosmopolitan of boroughs.”
