Archives and Local History

Haringey Archive Service is based at Bruce Castle Museum. The service holds the archives and the local history library and collections of the borough of Haringey.

Opening Hours:
Wednesday and Saturday from 1pm - 5pm
Thursday and Friday 9.30am – 5pm.
It is advisable to book an appointment.

The Archives include

• Official records of Haringey Council and its predecessor authorities
  (Tottenham, Wood Green and Hornsey)
• Parish records (except Parish Registers)
• Rate books, Admission Registers and Log Books for many local schools.
• Records of local organisations, businesses and societies.
• Census returns for Tottenham, Wood Green and Hornsey (on microfilm)
• Special collections of material relating to Alexandra Palace and the Prince of Wales Hospital.

The Local History Collection includes

• Books printed on the history of the area.
• Pamphlets and periodicals produced by local organisations covering the Haringey area.
• An extensive run of local street directories.
• Electoral registers dating from 1890 onwards.
• Local Newspapers.
• Ordnance Survey and other old maps of the area.
• Photographs, postcards and prints illustrating Haringey’s past.

Loans and Donations and Bequests to the Borough Archives

The Archive Service considers donations of suitable and appropriate documents relating to the history of Haringey. We also welcome the opportunity to make copies of important records held in private ownership, where a donation of the same is not on offer. Accepting documents offered as a loan may be considered in certain, though exceptional, circumstances. Once transfer of ownership has passed to the Archive Service, records remain in situ. Original documents are not transferred to a third party.

If you have documents you feel might be of interest for historical reasons, please feel free to contact the Archivist or the Curator at the address given below. Records are held in protected rooms in carefully monitored atmospheric conditions to assist conservation for the future.

Note on Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 creates a general public right of access to information held by public authorities. Access is subject to a number and variety of exemptions. Personal information is one of the exemptions covered by the Data Protection Act 1998. The Family Records Centre

The Family Records Centre aims to help you find the government records and other sources you need for your family history research. Click on the link in the External Links section at the bottom of the page.

Access to the Archive Searchroom

Access to the archive Searchroom is by appointment. Access without an appointment is possible at the discretion of staff, depending upon available space. It is open to the general public, free of charge, and you do not need a reader’s ticket. An adult must accompany a child under the age of 14 when visiting the search room.

We offer a limited free distance enquiry service. We will answer specific questions relating to information in our archives and local history collection, although we cannot conduct extensive or open-ended research on behalf of members of the public.
