Haringey’s Cultural Strategy 2008-2009

What is culture?

The term “culture” has a number of meanings. In its widest sense, culture is defined as the whole complex of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features which characterise a society or social group

This strategy uses the more pragmatic Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) definition which includes a variety of cultural activities:

  • visual and performing arts (such as painting, sculpture, photography, crafts, theatre, dance, opera, live music)
  • audio-visual (including film, TV and radio)
  • architecture and design
  • heritage and the historic environment
  • libraries and literature
  • museums, galleries and archives

So, culture is about improving the quality of life for all, allowing people to derive pleasure, to fulfil their potential and broaden their horizons.

In Haringey, we have the privilege of living in a borough where we can celebrate and share in a wide range of cultural diversity. Cultural services have a great deal to offer - and communities so much to gain - through a constructive, planned approach.

Haringey’s first Cultural Strategy covered the period from 2003-2007 and we are now developing a new cultural strategy and action plan.

How we intend to develop a new cultural strategy and action plan 2008-2009?

First phase

We will be pulling together the work we already do in relation to arts and culture in Haringey. This will be put into an action plan to deliver the outcomes and objectives set out in the London Cultural Strategy.

Second phase

We will work with residents, creative industries and the voluntary sector to develop Haringey’s cultural priorities. We want to make sure we are including as much as possible in our strategy and action plan so that we capture the artistic and cultural needs and aspirations of the borough.

The draft strategy will be available in the coming months, and will be found in the Attached Files section at the bottom of this page.
