Haringey: an opportunity borough

Haringey Council focuses on resident and business needs to create a business environment that will enable sustainable economic growth in the borough. Some of the services we provide are:

  • sign-posting information and general support to businesses
  • grants for environmental improvements on a number of industrial estates
  • grants for the regeneration of Tottenham High Road, in partnership with English Heritage
  • support for area regeneration through neighbourhood teams

Key Facts

  1. There are 8,200 businesses in Haringey that employ over 64,000 people. Just under 95% of these businesses employ 24 people or less.
  2. Almost two-thirds of residents work outside of Haringey.
  3. Average gross weekly earnings for (full-time and part-time) workers in Haringey are currently £436.60. This is compared with an average of £599.60 in London.
  4. It is estimated that 11.2% of people in Haringey are self-employed. This is compared with the London average of 10.6% and national average of 9.1%.
  5. At March 2006, 7.7% (7,900) of economically active Haringey residents were claiming Job Seekers allowance. This is compared with a rate of 4.6% for Greater London and 3.6% for Great Britain.

Regenerating Haringey

The Council and its partners are working hard to narrow the social and economic gap between the East and the West of the borough.  The East is historically the more deprived area of the borough with the West enjoying higher levels of economic prosperity.

What are we doing to narrow the gap?

Haringey is one of seven nationwide pilots for a City Growth Strategy (CGS). Based on a model by Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School, this strategy concentrates on developing the eleven wards to the east of the borough through focusing on their economic advantages rather than their social disadvantages.  Some of these advantages include:

  • Haringey's location in north central London makes it highly accessible to markets
  • vibrant entrepreneurial culture illustrated by a high level of business start ups
  • strong competitive advantages within key business clusters e.g. retail and creative industries
  • good labour and skill supply
  • being one of the most ethnically and socially diverse areas in Europe.

Did you know?

There were originally three manors in Tottenham. Bruce Castle occupies the site of the manor assigned to Robert de Brus, later King of Scotland
