St Ann's and Harringay

History

Green Lanes, a very deprived area of Haringey, has in recent years experienced economic decline and some violent crime related to the drugs trade. It has a high number of Greek, Turkish and Kurdish immigrants and more recently an increasing number of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian residents. The main road of Green Lanes is an important centre for economic activity with mainly Greek and Turkish traders.

Aims and objectives.

Some of the initiatives that demonstrated Neighbourhood Management’s commitment to residents concerns were:

  • Successfully finding funding to improve the Railway Bridge in Green Lanes by ‘branding’ the bridge with messages to give a positive local image, relandscaping the adjoining embankments, pigeon proofing and changing layout to deter graffiti.
  • Providing hanging baskets and new trees along Green Lanes funded through the ‘Making the Difference’ budget.
  • Christmas lights were put up for the first time through collaboration between the Council and Traders Association.
  • ‘Harringay Passage’ was cleaned up and improved lighting provided.
  • Providing newsletters translated into Greek and Turkish for local businesses.
