The Community Panel

The Community Panel is an independent group of local community leaders, looking at how they can make Haringey a better place than ever following last year's riots in Tottenham. The formation of the group, chaired by council leader Claire Kober, marks a determination to draw on local ideas and experience to do the very best for the borough both now and in the future. Further information about the group can be found on the about the panel page.

‘Taking Tottenham Forward’ - Community Panel publishes report and recommendations

Increasing opportunities for young people, strengthening community involvement and attracting investment and jobs are three of the ambitious and wide-ranging recommendations of a report published today in the wake of the riots in Tottenham.

'Taking Tottenham Forward' by the independent Tottenham Community Panel also concludes that the relationship between the police and community needs to improve, along with the image of the area.

Since the panel of local community leaders was formed in September 2011 to look at how to rebuild and improve Tottenham for those who live in, work in and visit the area, they have engaged with and taken evidence from a wide range of residents, organisations and businesses.

They also invited experts to help them address key areas of concern raised through their initial research.

Recommendations by the panel in their key document are aimed at a range of community, public and private sector organisations, all of which have a stake in the future of Tottenham.

Haringey Council Leader and chair of the panel, Claire Kober said:

The August riots were devastating for Haringey and particularly Tottenham, which is an amazing and diverse place with so much to offer to the community and its visitors.

It is vital therefore that people and organisations of the borough came together to counter the impact of the disturbances and to make Tottenham area that everyone can be proud of.

Through our research, discussions with the community, and engagement with experts, the panel has been able not only to reflect on the causes of last summer’s riots, but to make wide-ranging and ambitious recommendations for how we can all work together to create a better and brighter future for Tottenham.

Whether you are a resident, from a local organisation or both, we hope that you will support the recommendations and that we can work collectively to see that they are delivered.

The panel has invited a number of groups and organisations to provide a formal response to their recommendations, and to outline what action they may take as a result of the panel’s findings. Responses are expected by the end of March and will be available online.

The panel will meet in July for an informal review of how recommendations have progressed.

A formal review of progress following the recommendations will be held by the panel in one year’s time.
