Types of childcare businesses
There are six main categories of a childcare business.
- Full day care - Day care for children under eight for a continuous period of four hours or more in any day on non-domestic premises. For example, a nursery.
- Sessional day care - Day care for children under eight for a session which is less than a continuous period of four hours in any day on non-domestic premises. For example, a part time play group or part time nursery.
- Crèche - Occasional care for children under eight provided on particular non-domestic premises on more than five days a year. For example, childcare for parents attending a training course.
- Out of school - Day care for children under eight that operate on non-domestic premises during one or more of the following: before school, after school, during school holidays. For example, extended schools, breakfast clubs, and after school clubs.
- Childminding - Day care for children under eight on domestic premises for more than two hours per day.
- Independent Schools - Schools that are independent of local authority or government control. An independent school may offer nursery education to children aged 3 and 4 and may claim nursery education funding for these children from the local authority.
