Haringey Young Musicians (HYM)

HYM groups are open to anyone of school age living or attending school in Haringey.

Each group meets weekly for ten sessions per term, culminating in a concert performance with other HYM groups.

As well as high profile engagements around the country and successful participation in national competitions, many of the groups have toured abroad.

The HYM parent/staff association, which runs the tuck shop and helps with fund-raising etc, is a registered charity.

Big band

Based on a conventional big band line-up, but expanded to include most woodwind and brass instruments as well as a rhythm section including piano, guitar, bass and drum kit. Improvised solos are encouraged from every band member after skilful coaching and encouragement. The band plays many specially composed pieces and arrangements. Players should have reached grade five standard to join.

Brass Group

The Brass group is for players of brass instruments who have some experience of ensemble playing. The group plays a variety of styles of music, and is a continuation of ensemble work experienced so far.

Players should be grade three standard and above to join.

Guitar group - training

An introduction to playing fun and exciting music in a group setting. Students should have been learning for at least one year and be familiar with the fundamentals of classical guitar technique and music notation.

A step up from the training group. Players should have reached classical guitar grades one to two or equivalent level.

For older and more advanced players. The repertoire is aimed at classical guitar grades three to five standard.

Challenging repertoire aimed at the more serious classical guitarist, grades five to eight.

Saz group

For players of the Turkish saz (baglama) and darbuka, this group provides opportunities to perform folk music from the Anatolian region.

Stage Band

A 17 piece Jazz Big Band, designed to stretch/push the more advanced students from the Big Band. A large proportion of the music is drawn from transcriptions used for classic jazz bands from Count Basie through to Pat Metheny and Kenny Wheeler.

Steel band – beginner to intermediate

Our training steel pans group, giving experience and preparing students for transfer to the steel orchestra. Young musicians wishing to play steel pans should attend this group until the tutors judge that they are ready to join the steel orchestra.

Steel orchestra

Advanced playing for experienced players of steel pan. This group is highly acclaimed having performed in the schools proms and Notting Hill carnival in its busy schedule.

Strings - Training

Fun repertoire for players of all string instruments providing a grounding in ensemble skills. Players are usually ready for the training strings when they can read music including the finger notes They will preferably have attended a Strings Fun day.

Strings - Intermediate

Varied repertoire for players of violin, viola, cello or double bass. Players can join the intermediate group when they can read fluently and must be at least Grade 2 standard. They preferably will have some ensemble experience.

Concert orchestra

A full orchestra with experienced tutors. For players of all woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments of grade three standard and above.

Symphony orchestra

A full orchestra playing standard classical repertoire with experienced tutors to coach each station. Players should have reached grade five standard to join and will normally be asked to audition after their first or second rehearsal.

The Saturday morning music centre

Learn acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums or voice. All instruments are taught in small groups from 8.30am - 12.30pm. The choir, pop group and early years ‘melody shakers’ sessions all run from 11.30am - 12.30pm. All students are encouraged to take part in performances at the end of each term. Classes are open to any child living or attending school in Haringey regardless of ability. All applicants are placed on a waiting list and notified when a place becomes available.

Fun repertoire for players of all woodwind and brass instruments and providing a grounding from which to move on to the advanced groups. Players are usually ready for the training band after about one term of learning and should have reached grade two standard before moving on to the intermediate band.
