Transforming teaching
In Haringey we set out an ambitious programme to radically improve the access to, and quality of ICT in our schools. The main objectives were to:
- Transform learning and teaching by effectively enabling ICT
- Transform our systems so that they are accessible and inclusive
To help achieve this Haringey worked with each school to help identify their specific ICT needs. And with the ICT needs of schools and students in mind, we started a contract with a company called RM Education PLC. From September 2008 this company began providing a managed ICT service to all of the borough's secondary and special schools. This covers more than 12,000 students.
RM is now responsible for installing all the required ICT equipment, software and networks for secondary schools and for providing maintenance. The contract is for a minimum period of five years.
With a new infrastructure, networks, and equipment now in place, schools are using the increased ICT to support new ways of teaching and learning.

Today, students have greater access to state of the art ICT facilities such as interactive whiteboards, wireless networks, laptops, mini-books, and email touch-screen stations. Teaching and learning materials are available online and students have the opportunity to communicate with their tutors and other students through email, the Internet and interactive online learning environments.

An interactive whiteboard is a surface onto which a computer screen can be displayed, via a projector. The screen responds to touch and allows teachers or students to control the computer from the whiteboard. Whiteboards can help to communicate exciting, new ideas, and also encourage student involvement. The interactive whiteboard gives teachers the opportunity to use video clips, the Internet, interactive presentations and colour visuals in lessons.

All schools have received new PCs, mainly to replace older machines. The new PCs, supplied by RM feature the latest technology and connectivity and ensure that students have greater access to ICT. In addition, media suites for graphic and visual arts and music have been created with the very latest iMacs and software.

The Managed Learning Environment (MLE) is beginning to have a huge impact on teaching and learning.
This means that schools are now able to access the full potential of their new equipment and technology and make sure that the right ICT is available when the schools need it. Full Service is being supported by RM, who are training teachers on how to make the best use of the new equipment.
The MLE offers schools carefully controlled access to learning resources, online storage and tools for management and communication. Not just within, but beyond the school.
The innovation is enabling students to work from home and is extending schools beyond its traditional boundaries. The resource will also support parental involvement.
At Fortismere the school has done a significant amount of work with the Fronter MLE which is being effectively utilised by teachers and students – and in many instances work is being submitted and moderated via the MLE.
The schools are also starting to use the London Managed Learning Environment (MLE). This is an online environment where students and teachers can work work and communicate with each other. The London MLE is supported by the new Haringey MLE forum, designed to offer Haringey teachers the chance to collaborate and share best practice and resources.
