Major Emergencies

Major emergencies can occur at any time, and often without warning. However preparing for the worst can play a big role in reducing the effects of an emergency situation, and bring life back to normal quickly.

What does the Council do to prepare for emergencies?

The role of the Council in a major emergency can be very varied. The Emergency Services will usually lead the response, and the Council will provide support to them at the scene of the incident, and provide welfare support to the community.

The Council works to ensure it is prepared for an emergency in a number of ways:

Information sharing and cooperation

Haringey Council works with the emergency services, and other organisations locally, regionally and nationally to prepare for emergencies. Haringey Council is part of the London North Central Local Resilience Forum, which brings together the emergency services, the NHS, government agencies, Transport for London, utilities companies and the borough councils of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey and Islington. The forum allows different organisations to cooperate and work together to ensure emergency plans are as effective as possible.  The Council works with partners in the borough through the Haringey Emergency Planning Partnership.

Risk Assessment

Haringey Council participates in a joint risk assessment process, to ensure the hazards that could cause an emergency are as well understood as possible. This is vital to ensuring our emergency plans are as effective as possible.

After 7 July 2005, Londoners are only too aware of the threat of terrorism. Some of the other emergencies that may occur are:

  • Flooding
  • Flu Pandemic
  • Water pollution
  • Telecommunications failure
  • Major power cuts
  • Low temperatures and heavy snow
  • Air quality problems
  • Building collapses

For more information on the risk assessment process, see the external links section below for the North Central London Local Resilience Forum's Community Risk Register.

For more details about the risks that could affect the borough, see the Haringey Risk Statement in the attached files section below.

Planning for emergencies

Haringey Council has an emergency plan which we work to in an emergency. For more information see the Emergency Planning page.

We keep the plan regularly reviewed, and we carry out tests in conjunction with other organisations to ensure it will work.

Business Continuity Planning

Haringey Council is committed to keeping its essential services running in the event of an emergency. Inevitably, in a serious emergency, some services may be affected. The Council has plans to ensure it prioritise its efforts to keep going the most important services going, putting the welfare of the community first.

Warning and informing the public

If there is an emergency, the Council will do its best to ensure that the public is kept up-to-date. We will provide information on our website, and via our call centre and Customer Service Centres.

If there is an imminent danger, the Police will usually take the lead in providing information directly to residents.

In the event of an major emergency, it is usually best to go indoors, and tune into local radio stations and/or television news programmes. It is usually safest to stay indoors, unless you are asked to leave by the Emergency Services.

If you want to report an emergency situation, and there is a danger of serious injury or damage to property call 999.

For other emergencies you can call our Out-Of-Hours Emergency on 020 8348 3148.
