Championing the work of unpaid carers

Friday 30 May 2008

The role and commitment of Haringey's unpaid carers will be highlighted next month.

A series of events for both carers and the people they look after have been organised in the borough.

And it was announced today that Cllr Catherine Harris is to be Haringey's "Carers Champion".

The winner of the Haringey Carer of the Year will also be announced during carers week. Last year's Carer of the Year was Mr Luis Camara from Sidney Road in Wood Green - one of an estimated 16,000 unpaid carers in the borough. He was presented with a special trophy to mark the award.

Carers week runs from June 9-15. The theme of this year's event is: "Carers can't afford to be ill". The week is organised by 10 leading charities to support the UK's six million carers and its aims are to:

  • highlight and celebrate the contribution made by carers;
  • campaign for better support and services for carers;
  • promote policies and best practice that can improve carers' quality of life; and
  • reach out to 'hidden' carers, ensuring they know where to find help and support.

Cllr Bob Harris, cabinet member for adult social care, said:

"Carers are often so focussed on the person they care for they don't consider their own welfare - neglecting their health which in time will affect their own ability to support the person they look after.

"It's estimated that almost 6,000 people become a carer in Haringey every year, but many are "hidden" carers which means they miss out on the help and support which we and other agencies can give them.

"I'm delighted that Catherine has agreed to be the borough's Carers Champion to help us focus on the needs of carers in Haringey.
