Potholes

Potholes can form through repeated wear of the road surface, particularly during harsh weather. Although we inspect our roads and footways for defects and hazards, we welcome reports of potholes from the public. To do this please use our report a problem form, or contact the Potholes Hotline (see below).
To use our funding efficiently we assess the severity, nature and location of defects to determine the urgency and necessity of repairs. We give priority to those regarded as hazardous or serious. To ensure that consistent standards are adopted throughout the borough, clearly defined categories known as ‘Intervention Levels’ are set. Details of these are set out our policy which is set out in the attached file section below.

Update Additional Road Repair Funding
The Government provided £214,000 of additional funding for road repairs for the financial year 2011/12. This funding was split between the seven area committees to determine how to spend the money in their areas and to improve local accountability. The Area Committees made decisions in September 2011.
Officers carried out a survey of all borough roads in August 2011 and identified all the potholes which did not currently meet the council's intervention levels. The Area Committees decided that the funding should be used to treat potholes which do not meet our normal intervention levels and where funding is available, for some additional patching or resurfacing works. These works should be completed by end November 2011.
To ensure a consistent approach across the borough, the council has also put in £40,000 of its own highways maintenance funding to repair all the potholes detected in the survey.
Full details of all the planned repairs are available as reports which were agreed by the Area Committees in September 2011 are available on our road safety consultation page and can be found under the recent consultation section.
The Council normally spends roughly £400,000 on reactive road maintenance repairs each year plus roughly £700,000 on planned maintenance. There have been no changes to our planned highways activities and the reactive maintenance budget. The Area Committee allocations and the road repairs that are being carried out are on top of our existing allocations. We hope that by treating all the potholes before the winter sets in, that we will be in a better position to address problems that might arise from the 2011/12 winter
