Community care charges in a residential or nursing home

Questions and answers

This page answers some general questions about how we work out the amount you will pay if you move into a residential or nursing home.

It is not a full statement of the rules used to work out your charge. If you have any questions about this or any other aspect of charging for residential and nursing home care, please contact the Finance Assessment Team.

Why do I have to pay for my residential or nursing home care?

The rules for working out how much you will pay are made by the Department of Health and apply to every local authority. In most cases you will be required to pay a proportion of the full cost. The rest will be paid for by the council. This applies to both private residential care homes and to homes owned by the council. If you are receiving care arranged by a local authority you will be required to pay the full cost for your care, unless you are able to satisfy the local authority that you are unable to pay the full cost.

How do I give you the information you need to work out my charge?

We will help you or the person looking after your financial affairs to complete a financial assessment form. The form includes questions about your pensions, benefits, savings and about any property you own. We can either:

  • Help you complete the form at our office or visit you in your own home;

or

  • Send the form to you or the person looking after your financial affairs. You should then complete, sign and return the form to us with evidence of income and assets;

or

  • Help you to complete the form over the telephone and then send it to you or the person looking after your financial affairs. You should then check, sign and return the form to us with evidence of income and assets.
