Who is the Charter for?

The Charter is for people aged 18 and over with long term care needs and their carers. This includes people with:

  • addiction to drugs or other chemical substances, including alcohol
  • learning disabilities
  • life-limiting illnesses or HIV positive (or both)

What is in the Charter?

The Charter provides you with information about the services that health, housing and social services can provide and how you can get these services more easily.

The Charter is to let people know:

  • what services are available and who qualifies for them
  • what standards of service you can reasonably expect
  • where to get help and support, even if you don't qualify for help from social services
  • what to do if you are not satisfied with the services you are getting.

Background to the Charter

The Charter was introduced by the Department of Health in 2000 and is part of the government's initiative to encourage local health, housing and social services to work together. It has been developed in partnership by Haringey Council and Haringey Teaching Primary Care Trust, in consultation with service users, carers, patients and representatives of key voluntary groups.
