Take a break in supported housing

What is the Take a Break service and who is it for?

The Take a Break service offers you a temporary home in a supported housing unit if you are an elderly or disabled person and:

  • you are temporarily unable to live in your own home
  • you need extra care support for a while
  • your carer needs a break
  • you are ready to leave hospital but are not quite ready to go home
  • you are waiting for aids and adaptations to be installed in your own home
  • you would like to see what supported housing is like.

Where can I find the Take a Break service?

The accommodation is located within sheltered housing schemes across the borough. This means you can benefit from the scheme's facilities during your stay.

What does the Take a Break service offer?

  • self-contained and spacious accommodation including your own bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom/toilet
  • a fully furnished accommodation including a television, stereo, iron, hoover, bed linen and towels
  • peace of mind, knowing you have access to a member of staff round the clock, in case of an emergency
  • a member of staff to check on your wellbeing every day via an intercom
  • if you are assessed as needing it, a domiciliary or other care over and above the supported housing facilities
  • aids and equipment to help you live safely and independently, such as toilet raisers, bath grip bars and some adaptations to bathrooms
  • a phone for incoming calls only
  • communal areas, such as a garden, kitchen, laundry room, and a lounge for social activities
  • a place where your well-maintained pet will be welcomed
  • a relaxing atmosphere with people of your own age
  • a variety of activities - you need never be bored.

Can I live there permanently?

No, it cannot become your permanent residence. However, if appropriate, a referral can be made for you to move to another supported housing unit.

What does the service not include?

  • it does not give anyone the right to come into the accommodation without your express permission
  • it does not include any meals.

How do I get the Take a Break service and how much does it cost?

Please talk to your care manager who will advise you if you are eligible to receive this service. If you are entitled to a Take a Break placement, then the cost will be included as part of your care package under the Fairer Charging Scheme. You will not pay rent as you are not a permanent tenant and you will be planning to return either to your own home or to suitable alternative permanent accommodation when that becomes available.
