Your Home
For most of us, our lives centre around our homes. But having a home means we have to know about all sorts of things, from council tax to getting the rubbish collected, from parking to home repairs. This section covers all those things that relate to our home life.

Housing - information and advice
Housing Care (external link) is a site for older people, their families, carers and advisors, and all those who work with and for them. The site is run by the Elderly Accommodation Counsel, and offers advice and information about all forms of accommodation for older people.
Relatives and Residents Association (external link) provides support and advice to people with an older relative or friend living in a care home or long stay hospital.
Counsel and Care’s advice team (external link) works over the telephone and by letter to advise on a wide range of subjects such as welfare benefits, accommodation, residential care, community care and hospital discharge. They will if necessary advocate on an older person’s behalf with a wide range of agencies.

Council housing and housing associations
The Council owns a lot of housing for rent which is managed through an organisation called Homes for Haringey (external link). Housing associations do too and they also work with the development agencies that have taken over some Council estates. The Council nominates people from its own list (the housing register) even to housing it does not own. Sometimes housing associations will consider direct applications for sheltered accommodation. You’ll need to get advice from the Council, associations themselves and other agencies.
To apply for Council or housing association accommodation you need to fill in their application form. Telephone or visit your local area Customer Services Centre for more information.
Housing for older people
Supported housing is for older people or people with disabilities who live independently but occasionally need help. Haringey Council has over 50 supported housing schemes. These provide either sheltered housing with a full-time manager, communal areas and social activities, or community good neighbour schemes designed for slightly younger or more active people who need the support of a community scheme officer.
Sixty Plus aims to provide support to tenants who, although capable of living independently, require support to enable them to maintain their tenancies.
The Adult Placement Scheme finds family accommodation for adults who are unable to live on their own and would like support to live in the community.

Special housing schemes
A number of housing associations in Haringey provide housing for older people, and the Council can nominate people to them.
