We hope the information in this guide will be useful, and will point you in the direction of the services you need. If you want additional advice to help you decide what to do, the following organisations exist to provide that support. So feel free to get in touch with them. Some, such as Haringey's Customer Services Centres or the call centre, can help you with a wide variety of different issues and these are probably the best place to start.

Age Concern offers information and advice on a wide range of issues. They will provide you with the facts and you can make choices and decisions knowing you have reliable information.

They can help you with:

  • money matters
  • housing rights
  • health and social care
  • leisure and social activities
  • family and personal matters
  • your rights to local services
  • and most other things that affect your quality of life.

If they can’t help they can put you in touch with people who can.

They provide a wide range of regularly updated leaflets on financial information, housing and home safety, health and care, leisure and other issues. All the information is also easily accessible on line in PDF and plain text formats.

Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB)

You can get information and advice through telephone helplines or on line from the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (external link).

Citizens advice bureaux provide free and independent advice on benefits, housing and debt counselling online on the CAB Advice Guide website (external link).

Legal advice

Community Legal Services (CLS)
Many services display the CLS quality mark. This means they work to a recognised standard. The Community Legal Service Fund (formerly Legal Aid) provides financial support to people who cannot afford legal advice services, as long as they meet certain conditions.

The website for the Community Legal Service (external website) is available in English, Welsh, Cantonese, Urdu, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi and Gujarati. You can use this site to find contact details for other local advice services that have been awarded the CLS quality mark.
