Improving well-being

We can all take positive steps to improve our emotional and mental well-being.

In addition to seeking help from our service there are a number of things you can do to improve your health. They include:

  • Exercise

Regular exercise will greatly improve our overall health - it also improves your mood and makes you feel good. It is important to find an exercise that you enjoy. Haringey has a range of excellent leisure facilities - details of which can be found on this website or in the mental health service directory.

However, exercise doesn't need to take place in a gym - there are many things you can do including walking, cycling, sport, dancing, gardening or even DIY. If you build exercise into your daily routine you will have a better chance of maintaining it - a good example would be to get off the bus a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way.

  • Feed your mind

Everyone knows that eating a balanced diet helps to keep you fit and well. The right nutrients will also help to maintain our nervous system and ability to deal with stress. Eat a good variety of foods including protein (fish, meat, eggs, ), carbohydrates (rice, oats, pasta, bread, potatoes), oils (nuts, seeds, vegetable oils) and a least five portions of fruit and vegetables.

  • A problem shared

Talk through your problems with a trusted friend or family member - this can be a great way to relieve distress. However it may be more appropriate to speak to someone you don't know. A professional counsellor or a self-help group could be a good way of getting the extra support you need.

  • Make time for you

It is important that you make time to do activities and hobbies you enjoy. Learning a new skill, being creative or getting involved in a community project can great improve self-esteem and sense of belonging or purpose.

  • Learn how to relax

Find different ways to relax such as massage, meditation, yoga or even a warm bath can relieve tension.

  • Seek support

We all need help from time to time but when emotional difficulties become more extreme it is essential to ask for additional help. Let someone know how you are feeling - remember our staff are here to help and will be able to give practical, positive advice.
