Coming out or going into hospital

Going into hospital

Being admitted to hospital can be a frightening experience but medical staff are there to ensure that you are well looked after and that you get the treatment you need.

Read about going into hospital (external link) on the NHS website and their specific information on disabled people in hospital.

The Age UK website (external link) also has some useful information about going into hospital.

Benefits

Your benefit entitlements may change if you spend time in a hospital.

In most cases, your benefit entitlement will have to be reassessed to take account of your new circumstances. If you were not claiming benefits before you went into hospital, you may be entitled to if you do.

To find out if the benefit you are claiming is affected by a stay in hospital or if there are any benefits that you may be entitled to please see the Benefits and hospital page of the Turn2Us website (external link).

Private nursing, hospices and other organisations

Hospices provide care specifically for terminally ill people and give support to their carers both in the hospice and at home. Admission is arranged through your doctor or hospital consultant.

Some private nursing and rest homes also specialise in the care of the terminally ill. Your doctor or hospital consultant should know of such homes in your area.

The adult social care directory HAricare (external link) has details of a number of private nursing services, hospices and other organisations that can offer help and support. Support available includes helping you to cope with end of life, life limited illnesses, bereavement and funerals.

For more information visit HAricare and search for end of life, bereavement, nurses, hospices or palliative care, funerals or the specific organisation you are looking for, or go to the external links section below for the websites of other organisations that can help.
